After nearly two decades of investigations, one of the most notorious destinations in the North American horse slaughter pipeline is finally gone.
Animals' Angels has confirmed that the Bouvry Exports horse slaughter plant in Alberta, Canada has permanently closed its doors.
Since 2007, Animals' Angels has documented cruelty connected to Bouvry's operations. We were the first organization to expose conditions at the Bar S Feedlot in Shelby, Montana, filing complaints that led to the property's first official inspections. Over the years, our investigators continued documenting abuse at Bouvry's operations in both Montana and Alberta, gathering evidence that exposed the realities of the horse meat trade.
Working alongside our longtime partners at Tierschutzbund / Animal Welfare Foundation, we helped bring these findings before European authorities, retailers, importers, retailers, and consumers. As public awareness grew and pressure mounted, the industry began to change.
The permanent closure of Bouvry Exports is a significant victory for horses—and a powerful reminder that persistent investigations, public education, and international advocacy can create lasting change.
But our work is not finished.
Animals' Angels is now focused on ending the suffering that continues elsewhere in the horse slaughter pipeline, including the last remaining horse slaughter plant in Quebec, Viandes Richelieu, and the ongoing shipment of horses to slaughter in Mexico.
