Investigators were present at the small weekly poultry, rabbit and plant auction in Mayfield. The sale included ducks, chickens, roosters, guinea pigs, turkeys and rabbits. All animals were brought in by private individuals shortly before the sale started. Most of the animals were delivered in boxes or barren wire cages with no flooring, forcing the animals to walk and stand on the bare wire. Only a few owners took the time to add some straw and water to the cages. Some of the cages were overcrowded. All animals were placed together in one corner of the sales barn so that prospect buyers were able to look at them prior to the sale.
