It was a slow day at Sugarcreek auction with only 62 “slaughter” horses in the pen area. Kill buyer Bauer was in attendance. The pens were not overcrowded and the usual “kill pen” at the stairs was completely empty. Baker apparently had just shipped all his horses, because his two pens in the back were empty as well. The handling has improved significantly since our last visit. Workers moved horses in much smaller groups to the auction ring, which eliminated a lot of the agitation and panic. However, there is still room for improvement; one worker was observed hitting the horses in the face with his whip. No injured or emaciated horses were observed. Animals’ Angels will continue to monitor the auction.
