Investigators arrived at the weekly horse sale at 9:15am. It was a slow sale day, over half of the barn was empty. Walking through the aisles, investigators noted that there were a lot of Standardbreds and several Thoroughbreds. Many of them were really thin, several had fresh cuts on their legs. One had a deformed left front leg, most likely the remnants of an old injury. A Paint horse inside the left barn appeared to be quite sick, he had an advance eye infection and overall looked feverish and tired. A Morgan Cross mare also had a eye infection.
The auction started at 10:00am. Kill buyers Bruce Rotz and Jesse Austin were in attendance, as well as horse traders Brian Moore and Marlon Garcia. Former kill buyer Arlow Kiehl, who is almost 90 years old, was also in attendance, selling several horses. Many of the STB’s, the sick horses and the STB with the deformed leg went to the two kill buyers. Animals’ Angels will continue to monitor the situation.
