The Plight of Horses in Bouvry's Slaughter Pipeline

December 2012In a lengthy and in-depth investigation conducted in October 2012, Animals' Angels documented conditions at Bouvry Exports' various locations in the US and Canada. Investigators alternated between locations throughout this investigation to document as much as possible. Due to the sheer length of time this investigation encompassed, we have merely summarized the investigation in this newsletter, but we encourage you to read the full report for detailed day to day information.

Recent Investigation in Mexico Reveals Continuing Non Compliance with EU Standards

November 2012Animals' Angels investigators observed harsh conditions in EU approved Mexican slaughterhouses during an intensive investigation conducted in September 2012. The goal of this follow up investigation was to check if any improvements had been made since the 2007/2008 investigations had revealed abhorrent conditions. Animal welfare investigators are accustomed to observing the most egregious treatment of animals. Even the slightest improvements are welcome, but do not bring a cease fire to the battle for humane treatment of all animals transported to slaughter.

The Transport of American horses from Presidio, TX to Mexico for slaughter

October 2012_2September 2012, Animals Angels revisited Presidio's export pens in  Texas just a short, six-minute drive from the Mexican border. After days of filming and surveillance, investigators verified that the same problems exist as were seen in 2011 and again in March of this year, with one change:

How do you commit a crime in the US and get away with it? If you transport horses to a Mexican slaughter plant, you simply cross the border

October 2012AA has just returned from a ten day investigation of multiple export facilities & feedlots in Texas. A vastly increased number of slaughter-bound horses was observed, proving the known horse slaughter figures to be disturbingly underestimated. Equine protection laws and regulations continue to be broken and violated, with little regard given to horses embarking a slaughter house death.

America's Heartland Means Misery for some Horses

September 2012Last month, Animals' Angels conducted an extensive two-week investigation across the Midwest leading them through Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. Large scale kill buyers, so far widely unknown to the public, were found. These buyers have been quietly operating under the radar, violating the Commercial Transport of Equines for Slaughter Regulations, while shipping thousands of horses to their deaths each year. Animals' Angels decided it was time for their close-up.

Investigation at the Slaughter Horse Export Pens in Presidio, TX

April 2012_2The following abridged investigative report may be the best way of describing what we found in Presidio, TX and what took us there. It is important to remember that the situation at the export pens in Presidio is what is found everywhere along the horse slaughter pipeline.  In Shippensburg, PA or Presidio, TX; Butler, KY or Fairhaven, MI; Shelby, MT or Los Lunas, NM; Shipshewana, IN or Sugarcreek, OH-- the evidence is stark and clear: Horse slaughter and transport on U.S. soil or not, means suffering and cruelty for horses long before they stand in the slaughter kill box.

Action Alert-and Great News from New Mexico on several levels!

April 2012AA supporters for the huge response to our NM investigation of the Dennis Chavez auction in March in which AA found dying horses and hundreds of horses in poor condition, and the livestock inspector reluctant to act.  The timing could not have been better. Thanks to your voluminous(!) responses, telling the Attorney General, the Governor and other NM officials that this kind of treatment of animals should not be tolerated, pro slaughter interests discovered to be planning to begin operations in NM have been dealt a serious setback. Pro slaughter interests have applied for permits to begin slaughtering horses in Roswell, NM. AA believes that your phone calls have been extremely helpful.

A note from Sonja

March 2012_2Six years of cruelty investigations have made it absolutely clear: Horse slaughter means a free pass, in effect, kill buyer amnesty for abuse, neglect and animal cruelty. But never has one single location screamed horse slaughter's cruelty more than at our March 10 investigation. Horse after horse after horse - yet completely typical of what goes on unabated in the slaughter pipeline. No feeling person could help but be heartbroken, and very angry.
