Misner & Sons Rodeo Company and the shipment of California horses to slaughter in Mexico

December 2011Following a USDA/IES investigation and dismissal of Animals' Angels' concerns that horse trader David Misner might have violated California law by knowingly selling and shipping California horses that were then sent to slaughter, the most basic questions remain:

NOT OK says the EU

November 2011On U.S. soil or Canadian, the issue of drug residues in U.S. horses is hugely concerning to the EU, as evidenced in their most recent inspection report. The report, released on October 26, 2011, uses phrases like, "no official guarantee", "could not be considered reliable", "inadequate", "no supporting evidence", "standards are not industry practice", and focuses on concerns about traceability and certification.

Texas A & M fined for transport violations: Deluxe transport to slaughter but horse found dead

October 2011_2AA has gained information through a Freedom of information Act Request (FOIA) that powerfully underscores the cruelty of horse slaughter on U.S. soil. Under the most ideal conditions possible - including watering stops during single-deck transport, less packed conditions and multiple cameras with a team of monitors - a horse died in the bottom of a trailer during transport. Kentucky Supplier to horse slaughter: "Horse Capital" or Safe haven for kill buyers?

August 2011Kentucky is marketed to would-be tourists as the Horse Capital of the World, the state with "unbridled spirit." The logo sports a horse galloping through the word 'Kentucky.'  Ironically, Kentucky is among the worst states in terms of animal cruelty laws. Last year's MSNBC article titled "5 worst states to be an animal: Abuse laws lax", opens with, "What's the punishment for being cruel to an animal? In five states - Idaho, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi and North Dakota - the law's response is, 'Not much.'"

Inspected & rejected: Animals' Angels investigation confirms EU report

June 2011In May AA investigated the Morton, TX Feedlot and 2 export pens (Del Rio, TX and Eagle Pass, TX) after EU reports alerted us about large numbers of horses being returned at the Mexican border. EU inspectors reported that on the day they were present at the export pen, 40% or 12 out of 30 horses were rejected (advanced pregnancy, health issues and injuries). OISA data revealed that over a 10 month period when EU inspectors were not present, roughly 9% or 5,336 horses of 62,560 horses were rejected.

Former Race Horses dumped at Hoover's Auction on Kentucky Derby Day

May 2011When AA investigators arrived at the Hoover Horse Auction in New Holland, PA on May 7th and saw the thin thoroughbreds with the fancy gold nameplates riveted to their halters, they knew the basic story right away. Soon the details and names associated with these horses would make their poor health and rough condition all the more dishonorable and despicable. The fact that these horses were about to be sold for slaughter on the very day of the Kentucky Derby, was enough to turn anyone's stomach.
