Undercover Investigation Underscores USDA-documented Brutality

August 2009A thirty month long investigation into the plight of horses who have been sold for slaughter has revealed the worst levels of inhumane treatment. The abuse and neglect of these horses, sometimes referred to as "kill horses," was uncovered during the investigation and is consistent with findings and photographs contained in a 906 page document released by the USDA last year.

GAO asked to investigate cruelty to horses

June 2009Ithaca, New York (June 10, 2009)  The Animal Law Coalition and Animals Angels have asked the  U.S. Government Accounting Office (GAO) to investigate gross violations of humane laws and regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in connection with the commercial slaughter of horses.

Animals' Angels investigators see improvement for turkeys at Sara Lee Plant

March 2009In 2007, two animal advocacy organizations - Animals' Angels and United Poultry Concerns - called upon the Sara Lee Corporation to cover its trucks taking turkeys to slaughter in freezing weather. Our campaign grew out of an investigation by Animals' Angels on January 25, 2007 when investigators followed a truck loaded with turkeys on the road for four hours to the Sara Lee slaughter plant in Storm Lake, Iowa. The truck was uncovered, exposing the turkeys to bitter cold and icy winds. Snow and ice stuck to the metal transport cages in which the turkeys were huddled.

Mexican plant obtains approval from the European Union to slaughter horses for the European market

February 2009Bad news for our horses: A third horse slaughter plant operating under the name

"Empacadora De Carnes Unidad Ganadera, S.A. De C.V." has been added to the list of EU approved plants in Mexico. The plant, which is located in Aguascalientes, will share the market with the two already existing plants in Jerez and Fresnillo. The request to be approved for horse slaughter by the EU was filed on July 25, 2008; One month later the plant, which slaughters swine and cattle since 1997, received the approval.

Results from Freedom of Information Request show severe abuse previously undisclosed: New data provides over nine hundred reasons for the urgent passage of bill banning the slaughter of American horses.

January 2009Animals' Angels, an animal welfare organization based in Maryland, last week received over 900 pages of documents and photographs from  the United States Department of Agriculture taken during part of 2005 at the Beltex horse slaughter plant in Texas. Documents received 36 months after making a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, reveal an appalling number of incidences and an equally appalling degree of suffering sustained by horses. Evidence indicates alarming cruelty corresponding directly to horse slaughter.
